Larry Hayden

Wood Duck Shooting Stool, drake

1974, 8.5" x 13.5" x7" wood

Larry Hayden, a Michigan native has become a legend among wildlife artists. Hayden is the only five-time Best of Show winner in floating decorative art at

the World Championship Contest. Also a trained illustrator, Hayden’s paintings almost seemed like bird carvings on illustration board, carvings without wood. He would spend days out in the field, photographing live birds to use as a reference for his next carving or painting.

Larry Hayden’s main goal with his carvings was to show the intricacies of the birds being hunted. He has successfully done so within this Wood Duck drake decoy. While many would consider this decoy to be a work of art it still is able to function as a shooting decoy. The realism of Hayden’s decoys has been known to not only fool other ducks but hunters as well.
