Decoy Carver XIII

1984, 28" x 39" x 6" wood diorama

It was Jim McCullough’s fascination with American history that first led to his development of his unique talent. Through the use of hand and power tools McCullough has created

approximately 120 unique dioramas representing a variety of themes including historical, wildlife and nautical scenes. His skill has extruded a six inch depth into a much larger detailed world. Intrigued by the challenge of keeping every detail in perspective, McCullough has found an intriging niche within the art world.

In 1984 McCullough began work on Decoy Carver XIII for the avid collector and dealer of wildlife art, Andy Andrews, completing the work in 1986. It was not uncommon for McCullough to add in personal details for his patrons; one can see in this work the boat named Sandy, after Andrews’ wife. Through McCullough’s attention to detail, he is able to create an intriguing replica of a Decoy Carver’s workshop. From the detailed calendar found on the left wall, the open water seen through the window and the tiny replica of an Elmer’s glue bottle on the second shelf of the right side, McCullough has created a world of detail in which to get lost every time you study it.
