Jamie Welsh began carving waterfowl in his South Carolina home in 1988. He was inspired after watching an episode of Natural Geographic Explorer featuring the carvings of Tan and Jett Brunet, both World Championship carvers from Louisiana. Since then, Welsh has progressed from a novice to a two-time World Champion himself. Besides his Championships, he has won numerous awards over the years. A frequent judge at shows in the U.S., Welsh is a respected teacher and enjoys sharing his knowledge and love for waterfowl in seminars and workshops.

The Mallard drake, sometimes called a “greenhead,” is one of the most common waterfowl in the northern hemisphere. It has a glossy green head, brown breast, grey body and yellow bill. Most domesticated ducks originated from this species.
