Bart Walter (American, b. 1956)

Mountain Silverback Gorilla Maquette

2008

Bart Walter’s Mountain Silverback Gorilla is an expressive piece full of movement and intensity. The Mountain Silverback Gorilla lives in the dense forests of tropical Africa. Although strong and powerful, gorillas are generally gentle and shy. Recent research indicates that the numbers of wild gorillas have increased, but they are still considered endangered.

Bart Walters prefers to

sculpt his subjects from life and

in the wild. Bart often sketches his subjects in either charcoal or pencil, rendering different views and prominent characteristics.

After becoming familiar with the forms in two dimensions, he chooses a composition and sculpts a maquette (small model) in either clay or wax. This

Mountain Silverback maquette is a bronze casting.
